Overshoot in biological systems modeled by Markov chains: a nonequilibrium dynamic phenomenon

A number of biological systems can be modeled by Markov chains. Recently, there has been an increasing concern about when biological systems modeled by Markov chains will perform a dynamic phenomenon called overshoot. In this article, we found that the steady-state behavior of the system will have a great effect on the occurrence of overshoot. We confirmed that overshoot in general cannot occur in systems which will finally approach an equilibrium steady state. We further classified overshoot into two types, named as simple overshoot and oscillating overshoot. We showed that except for extreme cases, oscillating overshoot will occur if the system is far from equilibrium. All these results clearly show that overshoot is a nonequilibrium dynamic phenomenon with energy consumption. In addition, the main result in this article is validated with real experimental data.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure

Fuzzy PID Feedback Control of Piezoelectric Actuator with Feedforward Compensation

Piezoelectric actuator is widely used in the field of micro/nanopositioning. However, piezoelectric hysteresis introduces nonlinearity to the system, which is the major obstacle to achieve a precise positioning. In this paper, the Preisach model is employed to describe the hysteresis characteristic of piezoelectric actuator and an inverse Preisach model is developed to construct a feedforward controller. Considering that the analytical expression of inverse Preisach model is difficult to derive and not suitable for practical application, a digital inverse model is established based on the input and output data of a piezoelectric actuator. Moreover, to mitigate the compensation error of the feedforward control, a feedback control scheme is implemented using different types of control algorithms in terms of PID control, fuzzy control, and fuzzy PID control. Extensive simulation studies are carried out using the three kinds of control systems. Comparative investigation reveals that the fuzzy PID control system with feedforward compensation is capable of providing quicker response and better control accuracy than the other two ones. It provides a promising way of precision control for piezoelectric actuator

Simulation and Experimental Investigation on the AE Tomography to Improve AE Source Location in the Concrete Structure

Acoustic emission (AE) tomography, which is based on the time-travel tomography with AE events as its signal sources, is a new visualization tool for inspecting and locating the internal damages in the structures. In this paper, AE tomography is applied to examine a man-made damage in a typical heterogeneous concrete structure to validate its effectiveness. Firstly, the finite element (ABAQUS/Explicit) simulation model of the concrete structure with one damaged circle in its center is built, and the simulated AE signals are obtained to establish the AE tomography. The results show that the damaged circle in the created model can be visualized clearly with the AE tomography in its original location. Secondly, the concrete specimen based on the FE model is fabricated, and the pencil lead break (PLB) signal is taken as the exciting source for AE tomography. It is shown that the experimental results have good consistency with the FE simulation results, which also verifies the feasibility of the finite element model for AE tomography. Finally, the damage source location based on AE tomography is compared with the traditional time of arrival (TOA) location method, and the better location accuracy is obtained with the AE tomography. The research results indicate that AE tomography has great potential in the application of structure damage detection.Foundation of China (no. 51175079, no. 51305176) as well as the Fundamental Research Funds for the Central Universities (CXLX12 0079)

A new collaborative fault identification strategy using multivariate hierarchical dispersion entropy

    Get PDF
This article presents a fault recognition strategy using multivariate hierarchical dispersion entropy to monitor the conditions of rolling bearing. First, the vibration data would be measured from multi-channel sensors synchronously. Then, the proposed mvHDE is employed to capture fault information from the collected data. Finally, the fault features are input into the ELM classifier to automatically identify fault types of bearing. The feasibility and effectiveness of the presented intelligent fault diagnosis schemes are verified through experimental studies.publishedVersionPeer reviewe

Study on the Method for Collecting Vibration Signals from Mill Shell Based on Measuring the Fill Level of Ball Mill

    No full text
At present the method for measuring the fill level which used the vibration signal of mill shell shows its advantage compared with other methods. However, this method is developed late, and the technique for collecting the vibration signal from mill shell is immature. In this paper, a novel method for collecting the vibration data from mill shell is proposed. Firstly, the layout scheme of vibration sensors on mill shell is given by analyzing the axial and circumferential movement of coal powder in roller. And a special data acquisition system is developed, which can acquire vibration data from different axial and circumferential positions on mill shell. Then the sampling frequency is obtained based on impact model and hierarchical model of steel balls. At the same time, the impact region on mill shell caused by steel balls is considered as the collecting region of vibration signals. Experimental result shows that vibration signals collected by the method proposed in this paper present a high sensitivity to the changes on fill level compared with vibration data of mill bearing, which provides a reliable basis for accurate measurement of the fill level
